Student athletes team up for a Cause

SPRING, Texas – Worthing High School football and basketball players are working on the same team.

“It’s devastating to see how much water can do, and how many families have been hurt and how much they have lost,” student Keshon Williams said.

The students volunteered their time through the nonprofit organization called Lighthouse for Students, a group that focuses on mentoring students in the Sunny Side area.

“One of the students called me and said, ‘Ms. Kelly, you give us so much in this community. Can you please tell me how I can give back?” said Kelly Martens, the founder of Lighthouse for Students.

Williams was that student, and he took along his teammates and coaches to help clean out homes in one Spring subdivision.

“We’ve been breaking down the sheetrock, bringing it outside, taking out old things that have been damaged because of the flood,” Williams said.

” I don’t know who was better — the football team or the basketball team, but they were all great,” Cindy Anderson said.

The Anderson family is just one of the families who the group helped out after Cypress Creek flooded their home of 49 years.

“Not only saved by strangers, but strangers come out to help and get everything out of the house and that’s all you can ask for,” said Lauren Brockwell, Anderson’s granddaughter.

The group finished their day of hard work with a picture and a prayer.

“These kids want people to know that they care. Just because they come from a certain area of town doesn’t mean that’s who they are,” Martens said.
